This painting was made en plein air off of the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, west of Marseille. It’s a hidden-away beach requiring a bit of hiking to get there; I’ve only been once and made this painting while there, sitting there on the rocks with my paints all spread out around as the sun started to go down behind me.

This painting is part of Summer in le Sud (“luh sood”, a French word meaning “the south of France”), a series of paintings and watercolors made en plein air (outside, from life) as an artist-in-residence with the Leo Marchutz School.
