SUMMER IN LE SUD: Lavender in le Tholonet, June 30, no. 1
Le Tholonet is a town outside of Aix-en-Provence by about 20 minutes; one might call it an Aixoise suburb. The master painter Cezanne once lived in le Tholonet and painted many masterpieces there, and it has a lively restaurant next to the pétanque terrains. A little farther past the pétanque are lavender fields, and, lucky me, the gorgeous purple flowers hadn’t been cut yet. I woke early and went to the fields two mornings in a row to paint, catching them just before they were harvested. Sitting in the shade and breathing in the lavender fragrance in the early morning with hardly a soul around… it’s a good life.
This painting is part of Summer in le Sud (“luh sood”, a French word meaning “the south of France”), a series of paintings and watercolors made en plein air (outside, from life) as an artist-in-residence with the Leo Marchutz School.
Original oil painting on canvas. Painting size 11”x14”; overall size framed is approx 12”x15”. This painting comes framed in a natural oak floating frame and is ready to hang.
