SUMMER IN LE SUD: Antibes, July 9
SUMMER IN LE SUD: Antibes, July 9
While visiting a friend in Cannes, I took the chance to pop over to Antibes in the morning, which is about 45 minutes away from where I was staying. I’d been to Antibes, this darling, walled seaside town, when I was studying abroad in college and remember thinking it was the most idyllic place… and returning 12 (!) years later, I felt the same way, although it appears to have been “discovered” since I was there at age 21. The scene was calling for a long view, so I did something I hadn’t done before: I put three 11”x14” canvases next to each other and painted them as if they were one long canvas. I arrived later than intended and the sun was bright and harsh with no shade to be found, so I put a towel on my head and held it in place with sunglasses and painted like a madwoman. Painting quickly means that I’m fully focused and I get into a flow state that is intense and wonderful and my intuition takes over; this is the ideal situation for me and often results in paintings I am the happiest with… although I must say I was also happy to finish this piece and get back in the car’s air conditioning!!
This painting is part of Summer in le Sud (“luh sood”, a French word meaning “the south of France”), a series of paintings and watercolors made en plein air (outside, from life) as an artist-in-residence with the Leo Marchutz School.
Original oil painting on canvas. Painting size 14”x33”; overall size framed is approx 17”x21”. This is a triptych, painted on three 11”x14” canvases and framed as one piece as they’re meant to stay together as one. This painting comes framed in a natural oak floating frame and is ready to hang.
