SUMMER IN LE SUD: L'aqueduc de Roquefavour, Aix-en-Provence, July 4
This aqueduct, about 30 minutes outside of Aix-en-Provence, was built in the mid -1800s and is this beautiful and imposing structure set in the middle of the provençal landscape. I first drove underneath it a few years ago and had been wanting to go back to paint it ever since; this summer I took the chance. There’s a lovely stream flowing beneath with shade, perfect for painting, and it’s known to locals but never overly busy. I went in the morning when the sun was hitting the side in a particularly lovely way, and I especially enjoy the way that the aqueduct seems to be coming out of the green trees all around, that mix of man-made and God-made.
This painting is part of Summer in le Sud (“luh sood”, a French word meaning “the south of France”), a series of paintings and watercolors made en plein air (outside, from life) as an artist-in-residence with the Leo Marchutz School.
Original oil painting on canvas. Painting size 12”x16”; overall size framed is approx 13”x17”. This painting comes framed in a natural oak floating frame and is ready to hang.
