Aixoise rooftops, Aix-en-Provence, July 6
The apartment I stayed in in Aix-en-Provence had a rooftop terrace and I took advantage of it one evening while the sun was setting. The buildings are stacked on top of each other like they do in these old European towns and I love how everything seems to fit together like a puzzle. The sunset itself was out of view, but the sky’s colors were brilliant and gorgeous nonetheless. It’s a certain type of meditation to paint like this, and this particular evening was especially meditative.
This painting is part of Summer in le Sud (“luh sood”, a French word meaning “the south of France”), a series of paintings and watercolors made en plein air (outside, from life) as an artist-in-residence with the Leo Marchutz School.
Original watercolor on paper. This painting comes professionally framed in a lovely deep burgundy red lacquer frame with UV-protective glass. The overall size when framed is approx 15”x19”.
