Bonjour from Provence! This painting was made during an artist residency in the south of France this summer (2026) with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, my fourth summer painting in the landscape and by the Mediterranean. I painted this from life, "en plein air," as the French say; no photo references, simply looking at the subject while painting it. A challenging, exhilarating experience! 

Some backstory on this painting: this was my first day back by the water (the Mediterranean) and I had just been to my favorite spot in Cassis. La Ciotat is another little beach town about 20 minutes from Cassis and I’d heard over and over that I ought to paint there… so I took a little scouting trip to see. This is the painting I made that evening, on this gorgeous beach in a little cove with a happy, local crowd. I came back later in the summer and made two more watercolors, too.

This is an original watercolor on paper, size 11" x 14" unframed.
