La Place Richêlme, June 26
La Place Richêlme, June 26
Bonjour from Provence! This painting was made during an artist residency in the south of France this summer (2026) with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, my fourth summer painting in the landscape and by the Mediterranean. I painted this from life, "en plein air," as the French say; no photo references, simply looking at the subject while painting it. A challenging, exhilarating experience!
Some backstory on this painting: la Place Richêlme, or just “la Place", is, to me, the center of Aix-en-Provence. The market is open every morning here, then it turns over to tables and chairs from the restaurants around it for lunch service and into the evening. World Cup games were projected on screens, musicians play at night, and it feels like the most wonderful meeting place at nearly every hour of the day. I painted many, many watercolors in and around la Place this summer, and visited even more times; this is the first one I painted.
This is an original watercolor on paper, size 11" x 14" unframed.
