Bonjour from Provence! This painting was made during an artist residency in the south of France this summer (2026) with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, my fourth summer painting in the landscape and by the Mediterranean. I painted this from life, "en plein air," as the French say; no photo references, simply looking at the subject while painting it. A challenging, exhilarating experience! 

Some backstory on this painting: la presqu’île is about as far into Cassis as you can go, and I particularly enjoy painting there in the mornings before it gets too busy. This day I arrived a little late and someone had camped in my usual shady spot, so I moved to another location on the beach… in full sun! I didn’t last long there but I did make this watercolor showing the bustling scene.

This is an original watercolor on paper, size 11" x 14" unframed.
