Hidden beach at sunset after the dolphins, July 5
Bonjour from Provence! This painting was made during an artist residency in the south of France this summer (2026) with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, my fourth summer painting in the landscape and by the Mediterranean. I painted this from life, "en plein air," as the French say; no photo references, simply looking at the subject while painting it. A challenging, exhilarating experience!
Some backstory on this painting: I had finished a big triptych and was pretty spent, cleaning my brushes, when I saw some movement in the water. Dolphins! I had never seen them there before and it was rather magical. They were only there for a moment but I grabbed my watercolors to paint the view as a memory.
