Bonjour from Provence! This painting was made during an artist residency in the south of France this summer (2026) with the Leo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing, my fourth summer painting in the landscape and by the Mediterranean. I painted this from life, "en plein air," as the French say; no photo references, simply looking at the subject while painting it. A challenging, exhilarating experience! 

Some backstory on this painting: there’s a Matisse painting in the Met of a chapel that I’ve loved for a long time… and it looks an awful lot like this chapel here! As it turns out, this is not, in fact, the same chapel which is in St Tropez. But I went to this spot along the water to the west of Marseille and painted it twice!

This is an original watercolor on paper, size 11" x 14" unframed.
